Skylab was the United States’ first space station, launched by NASA in 1973. It served as a laboratory for studying life in space and observing Earth and the Sun from orbit. Originally a modified Saturn V rocket stage, Skylab provided astronauts with a living and working space in microgravity. Over three missions from 1973 to 1974, nine astronauts lived aboard Skylab for up to 84 days at a time, conducting experiments in medicine, solar physics, and materials science. Though it was only occupied for about six months in total, Skylab and the experiments conducted during this time marked a major step in human space exploration.
Welcome to Skylab STEM — we are an exciting afterschool program designed to ignite curiosity and build STEM literacy in kids between the ages of 7 and 12. Like Skylab we will learn through hands-on experiments and discovery. At Skylab STEM, we turn everyday questions into eye-opening science adventures, helping children explore the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and math in a fun, social setting. From building rockets to hot air balloons, from sandcastles to earthquake proof structures, from simple machines to entry level coding, every session encourages inquiry based learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving.
